Developer Story 3
over 3 years ago – Mon, Oct 26, 2020 at 11:10:04 PM

This update is going to be a little different than the others. I've asked some of our development team members to do write-ups about their experience with the project. The following is the third of these, from John D Kennedy, who is one of the writers of the setting chapter in the core rulebook.

I asked John, "Can you talk about your role and experience working on the Stargate SG-1 Roleplaying Game?" The following is his answer.

Hi! My name is John D. Kennedy, and I’m one of the writers on the Stargate SG-1 Roleplaying Game from Wyvern Gaming! I’ve been working in the field of tabletop game design for over 16 years, and for me working on a Stargate SG-1 product has been a dream come true. I got to work with some incredibly talented people like Steffie De Vaan, and it was so much fun getting to take my love of world-building and game design and putting it into a setting which I have loved since I first saw the Stargate movie.

For me, working on the Stargate SG-1 Roleplaying Game was a wonderful challenge to take on. It was not just a chance to get the stories I’ve daydreamed about with the SG crew but also a chance to tackle the great, limitless potential of the setting. Stargate SG-1 provides a setting where you travel through the stargate and can visit worlds of ancient alien empires, medieval castles, dangerous ruins, and worlds facing complex challenges, such as trying to earn freedom from the oppression of the System Lords and other nefarious threats. With such a broad canvas to work with, and with the goal that I wanted to make a game that I would be excited to play as much as someone new to it, I took the job seriously and did my best to stay faithful and true to everything Stargate SG-1 stands for while also creating whole new mysteries and places for players to explore.

It started with rewatching the franchise, which I’ll admit was less work for me and more getting to do something I would have loved to do anyways. The series has held up pretty well over the years compared to other series that debuted in the late 90s. It started with watching my old favorites, such as the original movie, episodes “Window of Opportunity”, “The Other Side”, and “Foothold,” and then I made my way through the first six seasons. I love those episodes the most because not only are they funny, but you see SG-1take on serious issues while also showing the diversity of stories that Stargate SG-1 can tell. Throughout the show you see the team take on alien overlords and sinister robots, but you also see the team talk about what it means to be human, about what it takes to do the right thing, and about standing up for your principles. The show really did not hold back when it came to complex issues, and through the eyes of O’Neill, Jackson, Teal’c, and Carter, we got to sit back and laugh, cry, and hope they survived the difficulties they were facing.

When it came to writing for the game, I had to sit back and divorce myself from everything I had running through my head about the setting. Sure, I could have written “The Quintessential Kennedy Stargate SG-1Story,” but unless everyone would have been really cool with reading about Unas and obscure mythology, I knew I had to look at not just what I enjoy about the setting but look at what the fans enjoy, too. This helped me identify the parts about the setting that would bring everyone together at the gaming table. I knew that I was not just writing this game for me but for everyone who has ever wanted to sit down and play a game in the setting. Drawing upon years of game design, I knew that the real key to making a great game was not just helping to build a game where people can play *a* Stargate SG-1 story, but to play *your* Stargate SG-1 story. This is a chance for anyone and everyone to sit down and have their own adventures in the world of Stargate SG-1.

Working with Steffie really helped in realizing that. We are both enormous fans of the setting, so as we worked on our individual parts, we wanted to create something that readers can go through the book and find their own things to get excited about. It has been immensely gratifying to hear back from the playtesters about the little plot seeds they’ve caught in our draft or how they finally have a way to play in the Stargate SG-1 world without falling into a generic, “Humans Shooting Aliens” kind of way. The in-game, off-world base called the Phoenix Site is a great way to give players the chance to make the character they’ve always wanted and to provide the motivation for them to work together. Steffie’s extraordinary eye for detail brought back some old villains from the show’s past and gave us a chance to let players take them on, and I’m really proud of some of the new villains we’ve come up with that are that classic combination of System Lord Arrogance and Realistic Motivations. Familiar faces like Ba’al, Anubis, and Yu are joined with new villains like Wepwawet, Circe and Callisto, and Hachiman, who all have their own motivations and challenges that the players can take on.

I’m pretty excited about this rulebook, and I still remember the day when I sat in on a Stargate SG-1 Living Roleplaying Game “episode” writers’ meeting, and they all talked about how much they loved one of the Goa’uld I came up with and how much they were going to enjoy killing them off. It’s that level of infectious excitement that I hope the backers of this project get to experience for themselves. This is the chance for you to put on your gear, travel through the stargate, and explore the galaxy on your own terms, and thank you all for the honor and privilege of getting to work on this project for you.

Developer Story 4
over 3 years ago – Mon, Oct 26, 2020 at 11:09:34 PM

This update is going to be a little different than the others. I've asked some of our development team members to do write-ups about their experience with the project. The following is the fourth of these, from Mack Martin, who is our lead game designer in the core rulebook.

I asked Mack, "Can you talk about one of your favorite game mechanics created for the Stargate SG-1 Roleplaying Game?" The following is his answer.

Our Campaign System

Salutations! I'd like to discuss the structure of a Stargate SG-1 Roleplaying Game campaign. Since we’re creating a game that mimics a TV show, we build campaigns in levels. From the highest level down, they are: “Series,” “Season,” “Episode,” and “Scene.” This system helps Gatemasters create a home game that plays like a modern TV series. Of course, if you’re an experienced GM who just wants to run his campaign the way you’ve always done it, you can!

“Series” is just our term for your campaign. It can consist of several “seasons” interspersed with “movies” (longer more epic “episodes") to create a narrative. During my own testing, I’ve run several different themes that touch on very different ideas. “Against the Tyrant” involved the PCs returning to planets depicted in the Stargate SG-1series to recruit allies. “Gate Aces” saw the players take on the role of elite F-302 pilots. Finally, “Abandon Earth” took place in an alternate universe where Earth was rendered uninhabitable. Each of these campaigns played very differently, but all followed our core formula.

Each “season” is made up of 13 “episodes”. In the “Being a Gatemaster” chapter of the Core Rulebook, we break down a rough outline of these “episodes,” including noting optional “episodes” for a shorter “season.” Many of these “episodes” can be rearranged, but by following the guide you’ll be able to create a narrative at home that closely mimics a modern TV series. For instance, your “Ep01” will set up the theme of the “season” and likely introduce a big bad. By “Ep03” your PCs have uncovered critical information, and by “Ep06” they’ll have suffered a great loss. All of this rises to an “all is lost” moment in “Ep12,” with victory (hopefully) being snatched from the jaws of defeat in “Ep13.” To avoid rail-roading the players, the “season” system is designed to be flexible, and the GM can easily adjust the narrative to fit their actions and goals.

“Episodes” are our term for game sessions. Our organized play will be published as individual “episodes” as part of a “season.” Each of your homebrew “episodes” is built from encounters, but like “seasons” they are designed to be flexible frameworks to avoid forcing the PCs towards a single solution. In an “episode,” PCs earn mission points, which they spend to gain new abilities and level up.

Finally, “scenes” are the challenges that build “episodes.” From pursuits through alien cities to firefights against Jaffa fortresses, Action “scenes” are any of the dangerous scenes in which characters might need to physically overcome an obstacle. By contrast, Plot “scenes” are social or intellectual in nature, including R&D montages to rebuild an alien vehicle or Convince “scenes” to talk your way into high society functions. Anything that moves the story forward and has a narrative risk is a “scene.”

With these simple tools, experienced and novice Gatemasters should both be ready to bring the Milky Way Galaxy to life on the tabletop with their own unique story!

In other news...

A few people have been asking about mock-ups of the add-on items, specifically the miniatures. Well, I do have news about this. Currently, all of the mock-ups are under licensor review. We will share them just as soon as we get approval. We know this is not ideal but it is currently beyond our control.

As for the miniatures themselves, do know that they will all be of the highest quality and because we want to provide the very best models, we have decided on Resin as the focus for the modeler. Rest assured there will be high detail models specifically designed for 3D printing. Files will include multiple versions of each model with and without supports.

Thanks

Stretch Goal 11 Unlocked!!
over 3 years ago – Mon, Oct 26, 2020 at 11:09:23 PM

2 Goals knocked out within 24 hours!

This deck of cards will contain items that are found within the core rulebook. The cards are a great reference as you do your load-out for missions and once on missions, they will aid you at the table. They will also be great for Gatemasters to use to hand to players that find items while on a mission.

Next up...

The next goal is at $275k and it is another 7 pack of digital STL files suitable for 3D printing. These are a set of Jaffa warriors, and we're excited to announce that one of the 7 miniatures in the pack will be of their Gou'ald overlord, Wepwawet.

Also, in case you missed this from out last update, I'm putting this in again:
